Why Simplify?

In a world where being busy is often mistaken for being important, choosing to simplify can seem almost rebellious. Yet Sarah Susanka presents a compelling argument that less truly can be more. By cutting through the noise, you give yourself the chance to hear your own inner voice. You become more present for the people and experiences that bring you joy. This book offers a refreshing antidote to the pressure to constantly achieve, accumulate, and do more.

What Is The Not So Big Life About?

The Not So Big Life, written by architect Sarah Susanka, encourages readers to rethink their priorities and carve out space for what genuinely matters. Drawing from her design background, Susanka applies principles such as editing, scaling, and focusing on quality over quantity to our everyday lives. The result is a thought-provoking guide that challenges the relentless pursuit of more and suggests that a fulfilling life comes from subtraction, not addition. This book isn't about drastic downsizing or giving up everything. Instead, it offers a gentle reframing of how you spend your time, energy, and attention. Susanka helps you identify the activities, relationships, and commitments that truly nourish you and let go of those that don't. The title itself hints at the core message: a life that isn't so big in terms of busyness and accumulation can actually feel much bigger in meaning and satisfaction.

Key Concepts from The Not So Big Life

Susanka introduces several core ideas that form the backbone of her philosophy. One is the concept of "right-sizing"—not just your home but your entire life. She suggests that every aspect of your existence, from your schedule to your possessions, can be scaled to fit who you truly are. Another key idea is "the space between"—the pauses and quiet moments that give life depth. She argues that we often fill every gap with activity, leaving no room for reflection or creativity. The book also emphasizes the importance of "editing your life" with the same care an architect edits a floor plan. This means removing the unnecessary to let the essential shine. Susanka provides exercises and prompts to help you identify what to keep and what to release. Importantly, she stresses that this process is ongoing; it's not about achieving a perfect state but about continually aligning your life with your values.

Who Should Read This Book?

If you've ever felt overwhelmed by the pace of modern life, this book is right for you. It speaks directly to those who sense that something is missing despite having achieved many external markers of success. Whether you're a busy professional, a parent balancing multiple roles, or simply someone craving more calm and purpose, The Not So Big Life offers practical wisdom without prescribing a one-size-fits-all solution. Readers who have found value in minimalist or simplicity movements will appreciate Susanka's nuanced approach. Rather than advocating for strict rules, she provides a framework for self-inquiry. The book is also a great companion for anyone going through a transition—career change, empty nest, or retirement—where reassessing priorities is essential. Susanka's architectural background lends a unique perspective, making the book stand out among typical self-help titles.

How Can You Apply the Ideas in Your Life?

Applying the principles from The Not So Big Life starts with small, intentional changes. You might begin by looking at your daily schedule: where are you spending time on things that drain you? Could you replace one low-value activity with a moment of stillness or a conversation with a loved one? Susanka encourages readers to experiment with saying no to commitments that don't serve their bigger picture. Another practical step is to declutter your environment, not for the sake of tidiness, but to create physical space that supports mental clarity. She recommends tackling one area at a time and asking whether each item contributes to your sense of home. The same goes for digital clutter—unsubscribing from emails, limiting social media, and curating your inputs. The goal isn't perfection but progress toward a life that feels both spacious and meaningful.
