Who Should Read This Book?

This indispensable guide is written for parents of late-talking children, grandparents, caregivers, early childhood educators, paediatricians, and speech-language pathology students. If you are worried about your child's speech development and seeking a reliable roadmap, this book is a perfect starting point. It also offers valuable insights for teachers and daycare providers who want to recognize children who may need a referral, and for therapists looking to better communicate with families.

Overview

For Canadian parents concerned about their child's speech milestones, The Late Talker: What to Do If Your Child Isn't Talking Yet delivers a compassionate and evidence-based roadmap through the uncertainty of early speech delays. Co-authored by developmental-behavioural paediatrician Dr. Marilyn C. Agin, along with Lisa F. Geng and Malcolm Nicholl, this book bridges clinical expertise with real-world strategies. It helps you understand possible causes, identify red flags, and take proactive steps to get your child the support they need. Whether you are navigating doctor visits, therapy options, or simply seeking reassurance, this guide lights the way.

What Makes This Book a Must-Read for Parents?

Unlike general parenting books, The Late Talker focuses specifically on children who are slow to begin speaking but may not have a clear diagnosis. It addresses the common dilemma families face when told to “give it time” and bridges the gap between waiting and taking action. The book provides practical checklists, intervention timelines, and criteria for seeking evaluations, empowering you to advocate effectively for your child. The authors’ combined experience in paediatrics, speech-language pathology, and advocacy ensures both clinical accuracy and heartfelt understanding.

Key Features You Can Expect

This paperback guide is structured for quick reference and in-depth reading. Key features include:

  • Expert Authorship: Dr. Marilyn C. Agin, a board-certified developmental-behavioural paediatrician, along with Lisa F. Geng (mother of two late talkers and founder of the Cherab Foundation) and Malcolm Nicholl (author and health journalist), bring unmatched credibility and personal insight.
  • Age Range Focus: Primarily addresses children from 18 months to 5 years, though principles apply broadly.
  • Step-by-Step Action Plans: From tracking first words to navigating insurance for speech therapy, each chapter offers actionable next steps.
  • Red Flag Checklists: Helps differentiate between a simple late bloomer and a child who may need professional intervention.
  • Treatment Options: Covers speech therapy, occupational therapy, feeding therapy, and complementary approaches like auditory processing support.
  • Resource Section: Includes contact information for organizations, support groups, and advocacy networks.

About the Authors

Dr. Marilyn C. Agin is a developmental-behavioural paediatrician who has evaluated thousands of children with communication delays. Lisa F. Geng is a passionate advocate and mother whose personal journey led her to found the Cherab Foundation, a nonprofit supporting children with speech and motor delays. Malcolm Nicholl is an award-winning journalist and coauthor of several health-related books. Together, they bring clinical authority, parental empathy, and clear communication that makes this book both trustworthy and accessible.

What You'll Learn from This Guide

Parents and professionals will gain a deeper understanding of late talking. Specific takeaways include:

  • How to distinguish between a speech delay, a language disorder, and a more global developmental concern.
  • When and how to seek evaluations from paediatricians, speech-language pathologists, and developmental specialists.
  • Strategies to encourage communication at home—from modelling sounds to using visual supports.
  • How to partner with schools and therapists to create an effective early intervention plan.
  • What to expect from common therapies and how to track progress over time.
  • How to manage the emotional toll on parents and siblings, and where to find support.

How to Get the Most Out of This Book

To maximize the benefits of The Late Talker, consider reading it cover to cover first to gain a broad understanding, then use the checklists and action plans as needed. The book is designed to be a reference you return to at different stages of your child’s development. Many parents find it helpful to take notes in the margins or highlight key passages. The resource section can be used to connect with local support groups and professionals. Additionally, the book includes guidance on how to talk to your paediatrician effectively, ensuring you get the most out of medical appointments. While every child is unique, the strategies in this book are based on the latest research in speech-language development and early intervention. Remember, you are not alone—many families have walked this path, and this book aims to light the way with empathy and expertise.
