About the Authors

Christina Maslach and Michael P. Leiter are leading researchers whose foundational work on occupational burnout has shaped how organizations approach employee well-being for over thirty years. Their expertise is at the heart of The Burnout Challenge: Managing People’s Relationships with Their Jobs.

How This Book Stands Out

Unlike typical burnout guides that recommend meditation or time management techniques, this book tackles the bigger picture. It argues that sustainable change demands a rethink of how work is designed and how people are treated. The authors bring a rigorous, evidence-based perspective, setting this book apart from quick fixes. For leaders ready to move beyond Band-Aids, it’s the essential playbook for building a healthier workplace culture.

What Is The Burnout Challenge?

Burnout is not a personal failing—it’s a workplace problem. Decades of research show employees don’t burn out from lack of resilience; they burn out because their work environment clashes with their needs. The Burnout Challenge offers a fresh perspective on this crisis. Written by Christina Maslach and Michael P. Leiter, the book reframes burnout as a mismatch between people and their jobs. It moves past tired self-care advice to focus on systemic changes that organizations can make to foster healthier, more sustainable work cultures.

Whether you’re an HR leader, a manager, or an employee trying to understand your own experience, this book provides a clear framework for diagnosing and addressing burnout. The authors draw on decades of research—including the Maslach Burnout Inventory—to explain why burnout happens and what can be done about it.

Key Takeaways from the Book

The Burnout Challenge revolves around six key areas where people and jobs can clash: workload, control, reward, community, fairness, and values. When a chronic mismatch occurs in any of these, burnout takes hold. The book explores how organizations can realign these areas to improve employee well-being and productivity.

  • Workload: Sustainable demands must match available resources.
  • Control: Employees need autonomy and input into decisions affecting their work.
  • Reward: Recognition and compensation must align with effort and values.
  • Community: Social support and positive relationships buffer against stress.
  • Fairness: Respectful, equitable treatment builds trust and engagement.
  • Values: Personal values should align with organizational mission and ethics.

The book offers practical steps for each area, from redesigning job roles to reshaping performance reviews. It emphasizes that burnout is a systemic issue requiring collective action, not just individual coping strategies.

Who Should Read This Book?

This book is essential for anyone responsible for leading or shaping workplace culture. Human resources professionals will find actionable frameworks for assessing organizational health. Executives and managers can learn to create conditions that prevent burnout. Even individual employees seeking to understand their own experiences will gain valuable insights into how work environments affect well-being.

Because the book focuses on the employer’s role, it’s especially relevant for decision-makers who have the power to implement change. However, its clear explanations make it accessible for anyone interested in improving their relationship with their job.

What Readers Are Saying

Readers have praised the book for its practical, non-preachy approach. Many note that it provides a nuanced understanding of burnout’s root causes, making it a valuable resource for both employers and employees. The integration of research with real-world examples has been singled out as particularly helpful. Others appreciate that the book avoids blaming individuals, instead highlighting the systemic factors that contribute to burnout.
