Why This Book Matters for Canadian Families

In an era where education choices are expanding, Teach Your Own offers a refreshing perspective on learning that resonates deeply with Canadian values of individuality and freedom. John Holt's philosophy, updated by Pat Farenga, encourages parents to trust their children's innate drive to learn—a message that is especially relevant as more families explore homeschooling across Canada. This book is not about replicating school at home; it's about creating a living environment where curiosity thrives, whether you're in urban Ontario or rural British Columbia. With insights that address modern challenges like screen time and college admissions, this edition provides a roadmap for a joyful, child-led education.

Who Should Read This Book?

This guide is designed for a broad range of readers interested in alternative education:

  • Parents considering homeschooling for the first time will find encouragement and practical steps to get started.
  • Seasoned homeschoolers can revisit core principles and discover new insights for the digital age.
  • Educators exploring child-centred learning models will gain a deeper appreciation for unschooling.
  • Anyone questioning conventional schooling will encounter a thoughtful critique that sparks reflection on what true education means.

While the focus is on homeschooling, the ideas are valuable for enriching any child's life, whether in school or at home. The book is particularly helpful for those seeking a more respectful, trusting relationship with their children.

About the Authors

John Holt (1923–1985) was a visionary educator whose works, including How Children Fail and How Children Learn, have influenced generations of parents and teachers. Pat Farenga, a longtime homeschooling advocate and former editor of Growing Without Schooling, brings contemporary experience to this updated edition. Together, they offer a voice that is both passionate and grounded, drawing on decades of observation and conversations with families across North America, including many in Canada.

Key Features of This Edition

This paperback edition includes updated chapters on legal issues, deschooling, and learning in the digital age. The authors blend theory with real-life stories from families who have embraced unschooling. Readers will find practical advice on navigating provincial regulations, starting the journey, and fostering a love of learning without curriculum pressure. The book is organized into accessible sections, allowing you to read it cover-to-cover or dip into specific topics as needed. With a balanced tone that respects both the ideals and the challenges of homeschooling, Teach Your Own avoids dogma and instead encourages thoughtful reflection.

What You'll Learn from Teach Your Own

Engaging with this book will offer insights into several key areas:

  • How to recognize and support your child's natural learning style
  • Strategies for creating a rich learning environment at home
  • Understanding the concept of deschooling and why it matters
  • Practical steps for handling legal requirements and record-keeping
  • Ways to build a supportive community of like-minded families
  • How to address concerns about socialization and college preparedness
  • The role of parents as facilitators rather than teachers

Each chapter invites you to question deeply held assumptions about education and discover a more trusting, joyful approach to learning.

What Readers Are Saying

Many readers describe Teach Your Own as a confidence booster, especially for parents on the fence about homeschooling. The real-life stories are often cited as both inspiring and reassuring. Some appreciate the updated edition's relevance to current challenges—like balancing screen time and fostering independence—while others feel certain sections could be deeper. Overall, the book remains a staple in homeschooling literature, valued for its philosophical grounding and practical wisdom. As with any guide, perspectives vary, but the core message—that children are natural learners—resonates widely.

A Revolutionary Approach to Education

Teach Your Own challenges traditional assumptions about schooling and offers a compelling vision for child-led learning at home. First written by John Holt in the 1970s and later updated with Pat Farenga, this book continues to be a foundational text for parents exploring homeschooling. Rather than replicating school at home, Holt advocates for trusting children's innate curiosity and creating environments where learning happens naturally. This edition brings the core philosophy into the 21st century, addressing modern concerns about standardized testing, screen time, and college admissions. Whether you are a new parent considering alternative education or a seasoned homeschooler looking for inspiration, Teach Your Own provides both philosophical depth and practical guidance.
