The Historical Context and Significance

Delivered during a period of intense social and political upheaval, Seminar XVII is often regarded as Lacan's most explicitly political work. Presented at the École Normale Supérieure and later at the experimental university of Vincennes, Lacan famously told student revolutionaries: “You are all hysterics—you demand a new master, and you will get one.” This statement captures the seminar's central argument: that rebellion frequently reinforces the very structures it aims to overthrow. For scholars of psychoanalysis, critical theory, and political philosophy, this seminar offers a unique lens for understanding the dynamics of authority and resistance.

Key Concepts Explored in This Seminar

Central to The Other Side of Psychoanalysis is the articulation of the four discourses, which Lacan uses to map the structures of speech and social bonds. Each discourse represents a distinct configuration of power, knowledge, and desire. The master's discourse, for example, underpins traditional authority, while the analyst's discourse opens the possibility of subjective transformation. Lacan also revisits earlier concepts, such as the objet a and the real, blending them into a broad critique of capitalist and bureaucratic societies. The seminar is notable for its explicit engagement with the student protests of May 1968, which Lacan analyses with characteristic incisiveness.

The master's discourse represents the traditional structure of authority, where the master's signifier dominates. The university discourse, in contrast, positions knowledge as a substitute for the master's command, often perpetuating institutional power. The hysteric's discourse challenges the master by demanding that knowledge be produced, while the analyst's discourse subverts mastery itself by placing the objet a in the position of agency. Lacan argues that these structures are not merely theoretical but embedded in everyday social interactions and institutions.

What Is The Seminar of Jacques Lacan: The Other Side of Psychoanalysis?

This volume presents the seventeenth seminar of Jacques Lacan, delivered between 1969 and 1970. It marks a critical moment in Lacan's teaching, where he formalizes his theory of the four discourses: the discourse of the master, the university, the hysteric, and the analyst. The seminar directly engages with the political upheavals of the time, offering a psychoanalytic perspective on revolution, authority, and knowledge. It is a demanding but essential text for anyone seriously engaged with psychoanalytic theory and its intersections with social and political thought. Nearly five decades after its delivery, Seminar XVII continues to provoke debate among scholars and clinicians, providing tools to analyse contemporary social structures through the lens of psychoanalysis.

Why Read This Book?

For those invested in psychoanalytic theory, Seminar XVII is indispensable. It signifies a shift in Lacan's thought toward the political and social dimensions of psychoanalysis. The seminar's exploration of the four discourses provides a systematic framework for understanding how power, knowledge, and desire intersect. Furthermore, Lacan's engagement with the events of May 1968 offers a unique historical perspective. This volume is not only a theoretical treatise but also a commentary on the limits of revolutionary politics.

Who Is This Book For?

This book is intended for readers with a solid background in psychoanalytic theory. It is not an introductory text but rather a deep dive into advanced concepts. Ideal readers include graduate students and researchers in psychoanalysis, psychology, philosophy, and cultural studies. Practicing clinicians interested in the theoretical underpinnings of psychoanalysis will also find value in Lacan's refined formulations. The text presupposes familiarity with earlier Lacanian concepts, such as the mirror stage, the symbolic order, and the structure of language. For those prepared to grapple with its density, it rewards careful study with profound insights into the human condition. It is also recommended for scholars in political theory, sociology, and cultural studies who seek to integrate psychoanalytic concepts into their work. The text is frequently studied in seminars on Lacan and is considered a cornerstone of his later teaching.

A Note on Engagement with Lacan's Work

Reading Lacan is an active process that requires patience and repeated effort. His style is deliberately challenging, employing wordplay, neologisms, and complex logical structures. This seminar is no exception. Readers are encouraged to approach the text with openness to its difficulty and to supplement their reading with secondary commentaries. Lacan's prose is notoriously dense, but the rewards are substantial. First-time readers may benefit from consulting companion texts or lecture series that explain the core ideas. While the ideas in this book have had a lasting impact on psychoanalysis and critical thought, they are not a substitute for professional psychological or medical advice. If you are struggling with mental health issues, please consult a qualified professional.
