The Reproduction of Mothering: Psychoanalysis and the Sociology of Gender, Updated Edition

The Reproduction of Mothering: Psychoanalysis and the Sociology of Gender, Updated Edition

$77.40

Psychoanalytic and Sociological Framework

This edition of Nancy Chodorow's influential work delves into the concept that mothering is not biologically determined but socially and psychologically constructed. Applying object relations theory, Chodorow argues that early childhood experiences—especially the relationship with the mother—shape gendered identities. The text examines how these psychological processes interact with societal structures to reproduce mothering as a female role. This interdisciplinary approach combines clinical insights with sociological critique, offering a unique contribution to gender studies. From a sociological perspective, the book explores how institutions like the family and education reinforce the cycle of gendered parenting, providing a systemic view of gender reproduction.

Overview and Significance

Chodorow's seminal text returns in an updated edition, offering a comprehensive exploration of how mothering and gender roles are reproduced across generations. Blending psychoanalytic theory with sociological analysis, the book provides a framework for understanding psychological and social mechanisms that perpetuate traditional gender divisions. Her thesis has been foundational in feminist theory and continues to resonate in contemporary discussions of gender, family, and identity. Readers will find a rigorous, well-documented argument that has shaped debates in sociology and psychoanalysis for decades.

Reader Reception and Impact

Since its publication, The Reproduction of Mothering has been widely regarded as a classic in feminist theory. Many scholars praise its logical argumentation and consider it essential reading for understanding the intersection of psychoanalysis and sociology. However, some find its highly technical nature challenging if they are unfamiliar with psychoanalytic terminology. The book's lasting impact is evident in its continued citation across disciplines and its role in shaping contemporary debates on motherhood and gender.

The Updated Edition: What's New

This edition includes new material reflecting developments in psychoanalysis and gender theory since the original publication. While the core argument remains intact, the updated content engages with subsequent scholarship and critiques. Readers familiar with the first edition will find fresh perspectives that address changes in the academic landscape and societal norms. The updated preface and additional commentary ensure the work remains relevant for new generations of readers and scholars.

Is this book accessible to non-academic readers? While it is a scholarly work, many general readers interested in gender theory have found it informative. Some prior knowledge of psychoanalysis or sociology may be helpful for full comprehension.
