About the Author

Robert Biswas-Diener, often dubbed the “Indiana Jones of psychology” for his groundbreaking cross-cultural research, is a leading authority in positive psychology. As a senior editor at the Journal of Positive Psychology and author of multiple books, he brings both academic rigour and practical experience to this guide. His work has trained professionals globally, and this book distills that expertise into actionable tools for coaches and counsellors.

What Is Practising Positive Psychology Coaching?

Positive psychology coaching applies the science of well-being to help individuals and groups flourish. This book serves as a practical resource for coaches, therapists, and counsellors who want to integrate evidence-based assessments, activities, and strategies into their work. Rather than fixing deficits, it emphasizes building strengths and fostering resilience. Readers will find a wealth of tools designed to enhance performance, satisfaction, and personal growth. The author draws on rigorous research to offer techniques that can be applied in one-on-one coaching or group settings.

Key Themes and Practical Applications

The book is organized around core positive psychology concepts such as character strengths, gratitude, optimism, and goal setting. Each chapter provides specific assessments—like the VIA Character Strengths survey—and structured activities that coaches can use right away. Exercises on best possible selves and gratitude journals are included, with guidance on how to facilitate them effectively. The strategies are not just theoretical; they come with step-by-step instructions and case examples, making them accessible even for beginners. A strong focus on strengths identification helps clients recognize and leverage their unique qualities.

Evidence-based practice is a central theme. The author cites research to support each intervention, offering a scientific foundation for coaching conversations. This blend of science and practice ensures that coaches can confidently apply these methods while tailoring them to individual client needs.

How Can Coaches and Counsellors Benefit?

This book is especially valuable for professionals seeking to expand their coaching toolkit. The assessments and activities are flexible, suitable for both life coaching and therapeutic contexts. Therapists, for instance, have used the content to integrate positive psychology into clinical work, such as strength-based approaches with clients. The strategies can also be adapted for team coaching, leadership development, and organizational settings. By using these tools, coaches can foster greater engagement, resilience, and well-being in their clients. The practical nature means readers can implement what they learn in their very next session.

Additionally, the book includes guidance on assessing coaching outcomes and tracking progress, essential for demonstrating value to clients or organizations. Coaches will appreciate the clear structure and ready-to-use handouts and worksheets.
