Understanding Sensory Processing Disorder

Has your child ever had a meltdown over the feel of a clothing tag? For many parents of children with sensory processing disorder (SPD), such moments are a daily reality. This book gently explains that sensory processing refers to how the nervous system receives and responds to information from the senses. For some children, this system is over- or under-responsive, leading to behavioural challenges like meltdowns, withdrawal, or sensory-seeking behaviours. The activities in this guide are designed to help children find their “just right” level of arousal, supporting emotional balance and joyful connection. The author emphasizes that while these strategies are beneficial, they should complement professional guidance from occupational therapists or other specialists.

Why This Book is a Must-Have for Parents of Children with SPD

Parenting a child with SPD comes with unique challenges. The Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun, Revised Edition offers a lifeline: a treasure trove of playful, structured activities designed to help children regulate their senses and engage with the world. Written by Carol Stock Kranowitz, a leading voice on SPD, this guide builds on the foundational concepts of its companion book, The Out-of-Sync Child, and translates them into actionable fun. Whether your child seeks deep pressure, craves movement, or needs calming input, these activities can be woven into daily routines to support focus, emotional balance, and connection.

How to Use This Book Effectively

Start by observing your child’s sensory triggers and preferences. The book includes a simple sensory checklist to help you identify patterns. Then, choose activities that match their needs—calming ones for overstimulation, alerting ones for low energy. Don’t be afraid to repeat favourites; predictability can be comforting. You can also involve siblings or classmates to foster social interaction. The book encourages flexibility: if an activity doesn’t work, try a variation. As one parent noted, the ideas are a starting point for creativity, not a rigid prescription.

Age-Appropriate Activities for Every Child

One strength of this book is its wide age range. Activities are labelled for toddlers, preschoolers, school-age children, and even teens. For example, a young child who avoids touching certain textures might enjoy a “feely box” game, while an older child who needs proprioceptive input can benefit from heavy-work chores like pushing a cart or carrying books. The book also offers adaptations for children with different sensory profiles, so you can tailor each idea to your child’s current state. Many activities require little to no special equipment—common household items often suffice.

What Makes This Activity Guide Unique?

Unlike many clinical resources, this book embraces play as the primary vehicle for growth. Each activity is carefully crafted to target specific sensory systems—tactile, vestibular, proprioceptive, and more—without feeling like therapy. The revised edition updates earlier ideas with new insights and parent-tested favourites. Parents and therapists have praised the practical, low-prep nature of the activities, noting how easily they fit into busy schedules. From indoor obstacle courses to calming sensory bins, the book offers a spectrum of ideas that respect a child’s individual needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this book only for children with a formal SPD diagnosis?

No. While the activities are designed with SPD in mind, many are beneficial for any child who struggles with sensory regulation or simply enjoys hands-on play. The book can also help parents better understand their child’s sensory world.

Can teachers use these activities in the classroom?

Absolutely. Many activities are adaptable for school settings, such as sensory breaks or calming corners. The book includes tips for incorporating them into daily routines without disrupting lessons.

Do I need special equipment?

No. Most activities use everyday items like pillows, blankets, buckets, or craft supplies. A few suggest inexpensive tools like therapy putty or a weighted blanket, but these are optional.
