Who Is This Book For?

This book is invaluable for anyone who spends time in the Canadian backcountry—whether you're a hiker exploring remote trails, a guide leading expeditions, or a camper seeking self-reliance in emergencies. It suits beginners with no medical background as well as experienced practitioners looking for a solid reference. If you're a student in wilderness medicine courses (WFR, WEMT, etc.), this makes an excellent companion text. It is also ideal for climbers, paddlers, and outdoor instructors who need to respond effectively when help is far away. Moving beyond basic first aid, this guide builds real competence for managing crises in the bush.

Overview

When you venture into the wilderness, medical emergencies can happen far from professional help. NOLS Wilderness Medicine is the definitive guide for anyone spending time outdoors—hiking, camping, climbing, or leading expeditions. Written by Tod Schimelpfenig, a seasoned educator with decades of experience at the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), this book delivers clear, practical advice for managing injuries and illnesses in remote settings. It covers everything from wound care and splinting to evacuation decision-making, all grounded in evidence-based practices. This is not just a first aid manual; it is a comprehensive resource that prepares you to think critically under pressure. The content aligns with NOLS's renowned curriculum, making it ideal for both self-study and formal courses.

What You'll Learn

This book equips you with skills to handle a wide range of wilderness medical scenarios. Key topics include:

  • Patient assessment – How to evaluate an injured person when help is hours or days away
  • Trauma management – Splinting fractures, controlling bleeding, and treating head injuries
  • Medical conditions – Recognizing and managing altitude illness, hypothermia, heat stroke, and more
  • Environmental emergencies – Lightning, snakebites, and submersion incidents
  • Evacuation and communication – When to call for help and how to prepare a patient for transport
  • Preventive medicine – Planning and hygiene to reduce risk

Each chapter builds on core principles, using real-world scenarios to reinforce decision-making. The content reflects current medical standards and is widely used in Canadian outdoor education programmes.
