Maternal, Fetal, & Neonatal Physiology: A Clinical Perspective

$250.03

Who Should Read This Book?

This text is invaluable for anyone providing care to pregnant women and newborns in Canadian healthcare settings. Obstetricians, neonatologists, family physicians, registered nurses, and midwives will find the depth appropriate for board exam preparation and daily practice. Nursing students in maternal-child health programmes will appreciate the clear explanations that bridge theory and clinical skills. Graduate students in nursing, medicine, or physiology will use it as a core reference throughout their careers.

Additionally, educators teaching courses in maternal-fetal or neonatal physiology often adopt this book for its authoritative content and pedagogical features. The fifth edition has been updated to reflect the latest guidelines and research, ensuring readers stay current with evolving standards.

Clinical Perspective for Healthcare Professionals

What sets this book apart is its consistent focus on clinical application. Rather than overwhelming readers with isolated facts, the author presents physiological concepts in a clinically relevant context. Each system is explored through the lens of pregnancy adaptation, fetal maturation, and neonatal transition, making it easier to apply knowledge in real-world settings. For instance, understanding maternal cardiac output changes explains why pregnant women with heart disease require careful monitoring. Similarly, knowledge of fetal lung development directly informs management of preterm labour and administration of antenatal corticosteroids.

Physiology is not taught in isolation; the author consistently asks, "How does this knowledge guide patient care?" The book also addresses controversial topics and variations in clinical practice. Boxes titled "Clinical Correlations" highlight evidence-based recommendations and common pitfalls. This approach helps clinicians reason through complex scenarios and make informed decisions at the bedside.

What Makes This Physiology Reference Essential?

Understanding the intricate physiological changes during pregnancy, fetal development, and the neonatal period is critical for healthcare professionals. Susan Blackburn's comprehensive text offers a clinical perspective that bridges basic science and bedside practice. This book has become a cornerstone resource in Canadian maternal-child health education, widely regarded as the go-to resource for those seeking a deep, evidence-based understanding of maternal-fetal-neonatal physiology.

Readers often mention that this is the book their instructors recommend, a testament to its authority and practicality. The fifth edition has been thoroughly updated to incorporate the latest research and clinical guidelines, making it a reliable tool for modern practice.

How This Book Supports Clinical Practice

The organization follows a logical flow from preconception through postpartum. Part I covers maternal physiology before and during pregnancy. Part II delves into placental and fetal physiology. Part III explores neonatal physiology and the transition to extrauterine life. Finally, Part IV discusses lactation and the postpartum period.

Numerous illustrations, diagrams, and tables simplify complex concepts. The pathophysiology of common pregnancy complications—such as gestational diabetes, hypertensive disorders, and preterm labour—is explained in the context of normal physiology, aiding in differential diagnosis and treatment planning. Nurses, midwives, nurse practitioners, and physicians alike find this structure intuitive for both study and quick reference.

Comprehensive Coverage of Maternal, Fetal, and Neonatal Physiology

The text systematically covers all major organ systems. For maternal physiology, it details cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and endocrine adaptations to pregnancy. Fetal physiology sections focus on growth, development, and the unique circulatory and metabolic adjustments that support intrauterine life. Neonatal physiology emphasizes the dramatic changes at birth, including respiratory transition, thermoregulation, and metabolic adaptations.

Each chapter begins with clear learning objectives and ends with review questions to reinforce understanding. The author integrates current research findings and explains the rationale behind clinical interventions. For example, the discussion of placental physiology includes not only structure and function but also how disorders like preeclampsia disrupt normal exchange processes.

Key Features and Organization

The book is structured to facilitate both sequential reading and topical study. Each chapter includes an outline, numerous tables summarizing key points, and references for further reading. The appendix provides normal laboratory values and conversion tables. The index is comprehensive, allowing quick location of specific topics.

A major strength is the integration of maternal and fetal physiology in parallel, enabling readers to understand the interdependent nature of these systems. The author also emphasizes cultural and ethical considerations, preparing clinicians to provide holistic care. Whether used for pre-exam study or as a clinical companion, this book delivers exactly what its title promises: a clinical perspective on maternal, fetal, and neonatal physiology.
