Why Emotional Labour Matters Today

In today's service-driven economy, the demands placed on workers extend well beyond technical skills. Arlie Russell Hochschild's groundbreaking book, The Managed Heart: Commercialization of Human Feeling, offers a lens through which to understand the emotional toll exacted by customer-facing jobs. From call centres in Toronto to hospitality in Vancouver, employees are often required to manage their feelings as part of their duties. This concept, known as emotional labour, remains fiercely relevant as gig work and remote interactions blur the boundaries between personal and professional selves.

What Is the Managed Heart About?

Originally published in 1983, The Managed Heart is a foundational text in sociology that examines how feelings become commodified. Hochschild draws on interviews with flight attendants and bill collectors to show how workers perform emotional labour. The book distinguishes between surface acting—faking an emotion—and deep acting—internalizing the required feeling. It remains a core reading in courses on work, gender, and emotion across Canadian universities.

The Core Concept: Emotional Labour

Emotional labour is the effort required to display or suppress emotions to meet job demands. Hochschild's analysis reveals the personal costs: stress, burnout, and a sense of alienation from one's own feelings. Surface acting (pretending) is less damaging than deep acting (convincing), but both take a toll. The book highlights how organizations control workers' emotional expressions and how individuals resist or adapt. For Canadian readers, these dynamics are evident in healthcare, retail, and education.

Who Will Benefit from Reading This Book?

This book is essential for students of sociology, psychology, and gender studies. It is also valuable for managers and human resources professionals seeking to understand workplace emotional dynamics. Anyone interested in the intersection of work and feeling—especially in light of contemporary debates about burnout and wellness—will find Hochschild's insights illuminating. The accessible prose makes it suitable for a broad audience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this book still relevant?

Absolutely. The growth of the service sector and the rise of emotional labour in digital spaces have only amplified its importance. Hochschild's framework applies to gig workers, call centre agents, and healthcare providers alike.

What is the main takeaway?

Hochschild argues that commodifying emotions leads to worker estrangement from their own feelings. She calls for recognizing emotional labour and compensating it fairly.

How does the book connect to gender?

Emotional labour is disproportionately performed by women, making this a key feminist text. It explores how gender shapes the emotional demands of work.
