$206.59

Effective counselling in today’s multicultural world requires more than just good intentions—it demands a deliberate, culturally informed framework. This authoritative text, authored by renowned experts including Allen Ivey, Mary Ivey, and Carlos Zalaquett, equips future counsellors with the microskills necessary to build trust, foster understanding, and facilitate meaningful client change. By integrating multicultural perspectives throughout, the book prepares practitioners to navigate the complexities of diverse client identities and experiences.

Why This Text Matters for Modern Practice

Clients today come from incregly diverse backgrounds, and effective counselling must reflect that reality. This book provides the tools to build trust, deepen understanding, and facilitate genuine client development. Its intentional approach helps counsellors avoid common pitfalls and stay focused on what matters most: the client’s growth. For those committed to ethical, culturally sensitive practice, Intentional Interviewing and Counselling is an indispensable resource. It encourages self-awareness and continuous learning, qualities that distinguish excellent counsellors. Whether you are a student or a seasoned professional, the principles in this book can enhance your work and enrich your client relationships.

What Is Intentional Interviewing?

Intentional interviewing is a structured approach to counselling that emphasizes deliberate, purposeful communication. This text, authored by leading scholars including Allen Ivey, Mary Ivey, and Carlos Zalaquett, provides a comprehensive framework for mastering the microskills essential to effective therapy. Readers learn to listen actively, respond empathetically, and guide clients toward meaningful change—all within a multicultural context that honours diverse backgrounds and experiences.

The book's core premise is that intentionality in interviewing leads to more productive client sessions. By understanding the underlying theories and practising concrete techniques, counsellors can adapt their style to meet each client's unique needs. This is not just a theoretical overview; it offers practical, step-by-step instruction that builds competence gradually.

Key Concepts for Multicultural Counselling

In today’s global society, cultural competence is non-negotiable. This book integrates multicultural perspectives throughout, not as an add-on but as a foundational element. It addresses how race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and other factors influence the counselling relationship. Readers learn to recognize their own biases and develop culturally responsive interventions.

The authors draw on decades of research and practice to present concepts such as multicultural intentionality, ethical decision-making, and advocacy. Case examples illustrate how to apply these ideas in real-world settings. The book also explores the intersection of technology and counselling, preparing practitioners for modern challenges.

Practical Applications in Counselling

Whether working in schools, community agencies, or private practice, counsellors can use the intentional interviewing framework immediately. Techniques like open-ended questioning, paraphrg, and summarizing are broken down into manageable steps. The multicultural lens ensures that interventions are respectful and effective across populations. Instructors have found the text valuable for teaching because it balances theory with application. One graduate student commented that it was “a great textbook for learning” and arrived in new condition, which speaks to its quality. The book's structure supports both in-class instruction and independent study.

How This Book Prepares Future Counsellors

Designed for graduate-level courses, this text guides students from basic skills to advanced practice. Each chapter builds on previous ones, with clear objectives, summaries, and activities for self-reflection. Readers appreciate the accessible writing style and the logical progression of topics. A student reviewer noted that the book “is becoming a real addiction” because of how easy and helpful it is for building understanding.

The emphasis on experiential learning sets this book apart. Role-play exercises, video demonstrations (available online), and case studies encourage active engagement. By the end, students have a solid foundation for practicum and internship placements. The book also aligns with professional counselling standards, including those of CACREP.
