About the Author

Dave Lowry is a seasoned martial artist and author with over four decades of experience in Japanese martial arts. He has penned numerous books on the subject and contributes a regular column to Black Belt magazine. His firsthand training in Japan and the United States adds authenticity to his work.

What Is In the Dojo?

In the Dojo: A Guide to Rituals and Etiquette in Japanese Martial Arts by Dave Lowry provides a thoughtful exploration of the often-unwritten rules and customs that form the backbone of training in traditional Japanese martial arts. Whether your discipline is kendo, judo, aikido, or karate, understanding dojo etiquette strengthens your connection to the art and its cultural origins. Lowry draws on decades of experience to explain the “why” behind bowing, proper conduct on the mat, and the significance of ritual gestures.

Lowry’s accessible style makes the content relevant whether training in a traditional dojo or a modern studio.

  • Dojo hierarchy: the roles of sensei, sempai, and kohai, and how respect is shown.
  • Training attire and weapons: proper care and handling of gi, hakama, bokken, and other equipment.
  • Rituals of practice: opening and closing ceremonies, meditation, and cleanup.
  • Etiquette in and out of the dojo: behaviour during class, at tournaments, and in daily life as a martial artist.

Each topic is presented with cultural context to help readers appreciate the traditions behind the techniques.

How This Book Can Enhance Your Practice
