Comprehensive Coverage of Key Policy Issues

This thorough text examines the major pillars of U.S. health policy: financing, delivery, regulation, and reform. It traces the history of health policy from the early twentieth century to the present, covering political battles over the Affordable Care Act and ongoing efforts to address costs, access, and quality. The book also explores the roles of key actors—presidents, Congress, interest groups, and state governments—in shaping policy outcomes. Terms like “managed care,” “fee-for-service,” and “health savings accounts” are explained clearly, and comparative health systems offer a global perspective on U.S. healthcare. While rigorous, the content remains accessible to readers without a specialised background.

What Makes This Edition Stand Out?

Organised both thematically and chronologically, Healthcare Politics and Policy in America provides up-to-date coverage of recent developments, including the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on health policy. It features case studies and discussion questions that encourage critical thinking. Readers appreciate the clear writing and practical examples that bring policy debates to life. The text’s balanced approach to theory and real-world application makes it a valuable resource for classroom and independent study.

Ideal for Students and Professionals

This book is suitable for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students in political science, public administration, health administration, and related fields. It also serves as a reference for policy analysts, healthcare administrators, and advocates seeking a deeper understanding of the political forces shaping healthcare. Each chapter builds on previous ones, but the material can be adapted for targeted reading. With over 400 pages, the paperback edition is both portable and substantive. The authors avoid jargon where possible, making it a practical choice for diverse audiences.

Why This Book Matters for Understanding Healthcare Politics

Healthcare in the United States is among the most complex and contested policy domains. Healthcare Politics and Policy in America offers a thorough examination of the political, institutional, and policy dimensions that shape the American healthcare system. Whether you are a student of public policy, a professional in the healthcare sector, or a concerned citizen, this book provides historical context and analytical tools to understand current debates and future directions. Authors Kant Patel and Mark E. Rushefsky bring decades of expertise in political science and public administration, presenting multiple perspectives on key issues from the Affordable Care Act to Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance. The book is widely used in university courses on health policy and is considered a staple in public affairs programmes.

Key Themes and Structure

The text is divided into several parts, each focusing on a critical aspect of healthcare politics. Part I introduces the historical evolution of American health policy, highlighting the political compromises that have shaped federal and state roles. Part II delves into the financing and delivery of healthcare, examining Medicare, Medicaid, and the private insurance market. Part III covers regulation and reform, including the landmark Affordable Care Act and subsequent political challenges. The final part offers comparative perspectives, contrasting the U.S. system with those of other developed nations. Throughout, the authors employ case studies—such as the opioid epidemic and the COVID-19 response—to illustrate how policy decisions play out in practice. Discussion questions at the end of each chapter encourage readers to critically assess the material and engage with current debates.

Pedagogical Features

Each chapter begins with learning objectives and key terms, helping readers focus on important concepts. Boxed features highlight real-world examples and controversies, from state-level Medicaid expansions to the politics of drug pricing. Graphs and tables present data on healthcare spending, uninsurance rates, and public opinion. The appendices include a glossary of terms and a list of influential court cases. This structured approach makes the book suitable for both semester-long courses and focused exam preparation. Instructors will appreciate the companion website with test banks and lecture slides, though these are not included in the paperback edition.
