About the Author

Dr. Ilana Yurkiewicz is a practising internal medicine physician who has witnessed healthcare fragmentation firsthand. Her clinical experience lends authority to her examination of systemic disconnects. She writes with scientific precision and caregiver empathy, making complex topics accessible. Her work appears in leading medical journals and mainstream publications. In Fragmented: A Doctor's Quest to Piece Together American Health Care, she combines rigorous research with personal narrative to craft a compelling argument for change.

Key Topics Explored

  • The hidden costs of siloed patient data and incompatible electronic health record systems
  • How referral processes and specialist communication affect treatment continuity
  • The impact of fragmentation on vulnerable populations, including those with chronic conditions
  • Case studies highlighting both breakdowns and successful coordination efforts
  • Policy proposals for improving interoperability and care integration

What Does Fragmented Care Look Like?

Fragmentation occurs when a patient's care is split across multiple providers, settings, and systems without adequate communication or coordination. Dr. Yurkiewicz illustrates this through real-world examples: a patient with diabetes seeing five specialists who never share notes, an ER physician treating a woman without access to her allergy list, a primary care doctor learning of a hospitalization days after discharge. These scenarios are not anomalies — they are the norm. The book dissects how fragmented structures lead to duplicated tests, medical errors, higher costs, and patient frustration. It asks a fundamental question: can we piece together a system that truly sees the whole person?

Why This Book Matters

As the U.S. health system faces increg demands, understanding fragmentation is more critical than ever. This book equips readers — whether students, providers, or policymakers — with the knowledge to identify disconnects and champion solutions. It is not a manual for immediate change but a foundational text that sparks conversation and problem-solving. Dr. Yurkiewicz's work reminds us that effective health care is built on connections, and that piecing together the fragments is a goal worth pursuing.

What Makes This Book Stand Out

Unlike dry policy texts, Fragmented pairs data-driven analysis with gripping patient stories. Dr. Yurkiewicz's prose is lucid and engaging, often drawing on her own experiences to humanize systemic flaws. The book avoids jargon without sacrificing depth, making it valuable for both classroom settings and general readership. Structured around thematic chapters, it includes practical insights for clinicians seeking to improve coordination in their own practices. Many readers appreciate the balanced tone — critical but constructive, never despairing.

What Readers Are Saying

Readers have praised the book for its clear narrative style and its ability to distil complex health policy into relatable terms. The personal anecdotes resonate deeply, with many noting how the book inspired them to advocate for better care coordination. Healthcare professionals find it a validating and thought-provoking read, while patients recognize their own struggles in its pages. Overall, the response confirms that Fragmented is both an important call to action and a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Overview

In Fragmented: A Doctor's Quest to Piece Together American Health Care, Dr. Ilana Yurkiewicz offers a powerful, on-the-ground examination of one of the most pressing issues in modern medicine: the fragmentation of patient care. Through vivid storytelling and clinical expertise, she reveals how the health care system's disconnects — between specialists, across electronic health records, and throughout referral networks — compromise patient outcomes and frustrate clinicians. This book is essential reading for medical students, health care administrators, policymakers, and anyone who has ever felt lost in the labyrinth of the American health system. Dr. Yurkiewicz doesn't just diagnose the problem; she illuminates a path toward a more cohesive, patient-centred future.
