Who Should Read This Book?

If you have ever felt frustrated by a faulty memory or wondered why you forget things, Forgetting: The Benefits of Not Remembering will change how you think about your mind. Written for readers of psychology, neuroscience, and self-help alike, this book requires no scientific background. It is also relevant for those dealing with memory-related conditions, either personally or through loved ones, offering a hopeful perspective on the brain's design. For anyone seeking to understand the relationship between memory and personality, or simply looking for a thought-provoking read, this book delivers a concise yet comprehensive look at a topic that touches everyone.

What Readers Are Discovering About Forgetting

Early readers have praised Forgetting for its clarity and depth. One reviewer noted that the book could have been titled “Understanding Our Brains” because it explains so much about how we think. Another appreciated that the complex material is presented in an engaging and enlightening way. The book has been described as an excellent text that challenges assumptions about memory, with one reader summarizing the core message: “Our brains have not evolved to record. More to predict. Thus, forgetting is essential.”

Dr. Small’s ability to make neuroscience accessible has been particularly praised. Readers with personal connections to Alzheimer’s disease or PTSD have found the book helpful in reframing their understanding. Educators have also valued it for its insights into learning and memory. Overall, readers describe the book as well-written, interesting, and informative.

Understanding the Science Behind Memory and Forgetting

Scott A. Small draws on decades of neuroscience research to explain why our brains are built to forget. He shows that memory and forgetting are two sides of the same coin—both are active processes that shape how we think and behave. The book delves into the neural mechanisms of forgetting, from the hippocampus to the cortex, and challenges the idea that a perfect memory is desirable. Instead, Small reveals that forgetting helps us generalize, learn, and adapt. It is the brain’s way of clearing clutter, making room for new information, and protecting us from becoming overwhelmed.

One of the key insights is that forgetting is not a passive decay, but an active process. The brain constantly prunes memories, strengthening those that are relevant and letting go of those that aren’t. This is crucial for our ability to form a coherent sense of self—our personality. The book also discusses how disorders like Alzheimer’s disease and PTSD involve disruptions in the normal forgetting process, providing a fresh perspective on these conditions.

How Forgetting Shapes Personality and Cognition

The book’s categorization under Personality is fitting, because Small argues that forgetting is integral to who we are. Our memories define our identity, but it is forgetting that allows us to update that identity as we grow and change. For example, forgetting past grievances can help us maintain relationships, and forgetting outdated beliefs allows us to adopt new ones. The book also explores how forgetting affects cognition—from decision-making to creativity. By letting go of irrelevant information, we can think more clearly and solve problems more effectively.

Small’s explanations are grounded in scientific studies, but he presents them in an accessible way. He uses real-world examples and analogies to illustrate how forgetting works in daily life. Whether you are a student, a professional, or simply curious about how your mind operates, this book offers valuable insights into the hidden benefits of forgetting.

What Can Forgetting Teach Us About the Mind?

In Forgetting: The Benefits of Not Remembering, neurologist Scott A. Small turns the conventional wisdom about memory on its head. We often view forgetting as a failure—a glitch in our mental machinery. But Small argues that forgetting is not only normal but essential. It allows our brains to prioritize what matters, make sense of the world, and move forward without being weighed down by every detail. This book offers a compelling exploration of how forgetting is a fundamental part of how our minds work, with profound implications for personality, mental health, and everyday life.
