About Dr. Edward Howell

Dr. Edward Howell, an American physician and researcher, is widely regarded as the father of enzyme nutrition. His life’s work focused on the critical role enzymes play in human health, culminating in the theory of enzyme nutrition. Although his ideas were initially met with scepticism, they have since gained traction within the raw food and holistic health movements. This book represents decades of his research, offering readers a comprehensive look at the science behind enzymes and ageing.

Those interested in the connection between diet and longevity will find Howell’s insights invaluable. His work remains a key reference for understanding the principles behind raw food diets and preventive health.

What Are Food Enzymes and Why Do They Matter?

Food enzymes are natural catalysts found in raw, unprocessed foods. They assist in breaking down nutrients during digestion, eg the burden on the body’s own enzyme production. Dr. Howell proposed that a diet rich in live, enzyme-containing foods can help conserve the body’s enzyme reserves, potentially slowing the ageing process and supporting long-term health.

This revised and enlarged edition expands on Howell’s original theories, providing a deeper exploration of the relationship between enzymes, digestion, and ageing. While the foundational concepts date back to the early 20th century, the book remains a cornerstone for those exploring natural health and raw food lifestyles.

Key Concepts in Food Enzymes for Health & Longevity

Howell’s central thesis is that enzymes are finite within the body. Cooking destroys natural enzymes in food, forcing the body to produce more digestive enzymes at the expense of metabolic enzymes. This diversion, he argued, may accelerate ageing and contribute to chronic health issues.

The book distinguishes between two types of enzymes: food enzymes from raw foods and digestive enzymes produced by the body. Howell suggests that consuming raw, enzyme-rich foods can spare the body’s enzyme production, allowing more energy to be directed toward repair and detoxification. Detailed discussions on sprouting, juicing, and fermentation as methods to boost enzyme intake are included.

This revised edition features updated references and expanded chapters on specific foods and their enzyme content. Although some of the research is historical, the core principles continue to influence modern nutritional thought.

How This Book Can Support Your Wellness Journey

Whether you are new to the concept of food enzymes or seeking to deepen your knowledge, this book offers a solid foundation. It provides practical guidance on incorporating more raw, enzyme-rich foods into your daily diet. Howell explains how simple practices like juicing fresh vegetables, sprouting seeds, and including fermented foods can complement a balanced approach to eating.

It is important to note that the book’s theories are not a substitute for professional medical advice. However, for those interested in preventive health and natural approaches, Food Enzymes for Health & Longevity serves as a thought-provoking resource. The revised edition aims to make the material more accessible to modern readers while preserving the original essence.
