Why Choose This Book?

In a field filled with parenting psychology books, Engaging Autism stands apart because it was crafted by the originators of the Floortime model. Stanley I. Greenspan and Serena Wieder devoted decades to refining and researching this approach, and their expertise permeates every chapter. The book strikes a harmonious balance between theory and practice, explaining the reasoning behind each strategy so readers can adapt principles to their unique circumstances. While no single resource can address every child's needs, this volume offers a flexible, compassionate roadmap. Parents and professionals alike often report that the Floortime perspective transforms how they view their child—from a set of deficits to a person brimming with potential for connection. For anyone seeking deeper understanding and practical strategies to support a child with autism, this book remains an indispensable guide.

An Overview of Engaging Autism and the Floortime Approach

Every child deserves the opportunity to connect, communicate, and think in meaningful ways. For children on the autism spectrum, these milestones sometimes require a different path. Engaging Autism: Using the Floortime Approach to Help Children Relate, Communicate, and Think offers parents, educators, and therapists a comprehensive guide to the DIR®/Floortime model—a relationship-based intervention that meets children where they are developmentally. Written by Stanley I. Greenspan and Serena Wieder, this book provides a clear, step-by-step framework for fostering emotional and intellectual growth through playful interaction. Rather than focusing solely on behavioural compliance, the Floortime approach emphasizes following the child's lead and building on their natural interests to create shared attention, engagement, and problem-solving. This book is widely considered one of the best child psychology books for understanding autism from a developmental perspective.

Key Features of This Book

This paperback edition is packed with practical guidance grounded in decades of clinical experience. Key features include:

  • Comprehensive Coverage: The book explains the six developmental milestones (self-regulation, engagement, two-way communication, complex communication, emotional ideas, and logical thinking) and how to support each one.
  • Real-Life Examples: Numerous case studies illustrate how the Floortime approach works in everyday settings—at home, in school, and during therapy sessions.
  • Practical Strategies: Parents and professionals will find specific techniques for opening circles of communication, expanding interactions, and handling challenging behaviours.
  • Collaborative Focus: The authors emphasize the importance of a team approach, including parents, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and educators working together.
  • Updated Edition: This Merloyd Lawrence Book edition incorporates recent advances in autism research and the authors' ongoing work.

Who Should Read Engaging Autism?

This book speaks to a wide audience, making it a versatile resource in the field of child psychology books:

  • Parents of Children with Autism: Whether your child has a recent diagnosis or you have been navigating autism for years, this book provides actionable tools to enhance daily interactions. Many parents appreciate the respectful, child-centred philosophy.
  • Educators and Special Education Teachers: Classroom strategies that incorporate Floortime principles can help create inclusive environments where all students feel engaged.
  • Therapists and Clinicians: Speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists, and behaviour specialists will find a rich framework to complement other interventions.
  • Students in Psychology or Special Education: As one of the best books on child psychology written by pioneers in the field, it offers essential theoretical and practical knowledge.

How Does Floortime Differ from Other Interventions?

Many approaches to autism focus on teaching specific skills through repetition or rewards. Floortime, by contrast, prioritizes emotional connection as the foundation for learning. Instead of drilling words or actions, the adult follows the child's lead, joining their play and gradually introducing challenges that promote higher-level thinking. This question often arises: “How does Floortime differ from ABA or other methods?” The book addresses this directly, explaining that Floortime is not a stand-alone alternative but can be integrated with other therapies. The authors argue that development happens most naturally when children feel safe, understood, and motivated to interact. For professionals who work with nonverbal or minimally verbal children, the Floortime approach offers specific techniques to build preverbal communication through gestures, sounds, and emotional expressions.

What You'll Learn from the Floortime Approach

Readers can expect to gain a deeper understanding of how to nurture their child's unique potential. While no book can replace individualized professional support, Engaging Autism offers valuable insights that may help:

  • Understand the core principles of the DIR model (Developmental, Individual-Differences, Relationship-Based).
  • Learn how to create playful, emotionally rich interactions that foster joint attention and shared meaning.
  • Recognize each child's sensory processing and motor planning differences and adapt interactions accordingly.
  • Move beyond rote skills to help children develop authentic, flexible thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Build a supportive environment that respects the child's emotional world while encouraging growth.

The book explores how to work through common challenges such as meltdowns, scripting, and withdrawal, offering strategies that honour the child's perspective. Parents may find that these approaches strengthen their bond with their child while promoting communication and social skills.
