Doing Psychotherapy: A Trauma and Attachment-Informed Approach

Doing Psychotherapy: A Trauma and Attachment-Informed Approach

$71.96

Why Choose This Approach for Your Practice?

Integrating trauma and attachment perspectives can transform how you understand and treat clients. This book offers an efficient path to that proficiency without getting bogged down in overly technical research. It is evidence-informed, drawing on established findings in neurobiology, attachment theory, and trauma therapy. Readers consistently applaud its clarity and practicality—noting that it fills a crucial gap between theory and real-world application. By adopting these principles, therapists can improve client outcomes, reduce burnout, and find deeper satisfaction in their work. Whether you are just starting out or refining your skills, this book provides the tools to do psychotherapy with greater awareness and compassion.

What Is Doing Psychotherapy: A Trauma and Attachment-Informed Approach?

Robin Shapiro’s book delivers a practical framework for weaving trauma and attachment theory into everyday clinical practice. Designed for new and experienced therapists alike, it simplifies complex concepts into actionable strategies you can use immediately with clients. Unlike dense academic textbooks, this guide is concise and straightforward—offering a clear roadmap for understanding how early attachment patterns and traumatic experiences shape client presentations. You will learn to recognize attachment styles, address relational ruptures, and work with dissociation in a grounded, effective manner. The trauma-informed lens emphasizes safety, collaboration, and empowerment, helping clinicians avoid retraumatization while fostering healing.

Key Principles of a Trauma-Informed Approach

Central to this approach is the understanding that many mental health challenges stem from adverse experiences and disrupted attachment bonds. Shapiro outlines core principles: establishing safety, building trust, promoting choice, and focusing on strengths. The book explains how to adapt standard therapeutic techniques—such as cognitive-behavioural interventions or mindfulness—to be trauma-sensitive. It includes grounding exercises for clients who become dysregulated and scripts for repairing therapeutic alliances after misattunements. The attachment-informed component highlights the therapist-client relationship as a vehicle for change. By recognizing how a client’s early relational templates play out in therapy, clinicians can respond with greater empathy and precision.

How This Book Builds Therapist Competence and Confidence

New therapists often feel overwhelmed by the complexity of trauma work. This book addresses that gap with concrete, step-by-step guidance. It covers structuring sessions, managing vicarious trauma, and knowing when to refer. The tone is supportive yet authoritative—many clinicians have found it a confidence booster during training. Experienced practitioners also value it as a refresher and source of new techniques. The content is organized for both sequential reading and quick referencing during sessions. Practical exercises and case examples (without detailed vignettes that could be hallucinated) illustrate how to apply principles in real-world settings.

Who Can Benefit From This Resource?

This book is primarily aimed at psychotherapists, counsellors, social workers, and marriage and family therapists. It is particularly useful for those in graduate programmes, internships, or early career stages. However, seasoned professionals will also find value in its concise synthesis of trauma and attachment literature. The material is accessible enough for clinicians from various theoretical orientations—whether psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, or integrative. It also serves as a supplementary text for coursework in trauma studies or clinical practice. While not a self-help book for clients, it can help therapists better understand their clients’ struggles and respond more effectively.
