An Essential Guide for Ageing Cyclists

Cycling Past 50 belongs to the Ageless Athlete Series, written by celebrated coach Joe Friel. It's a thorough training manual designed especially for cyclists aged 50 and up. The book tackles the distinct physical shifts that occur as we age and offers realistic tactics to sustain—and even boost—your performance. Whether you race at a high level or enjoy casual rides, Friel's scientifically grounded methods encourage you to train more effectively, not more intensely. It includes a wide range of topics: building aerobic capacity, strength work, nutritional strategies, and recovery techniques, all within reasonable expectations for older athletes.

Who Should Read This Book?

Designed for cyclists aged 50 and over, this guide is perfect for anyone who wants to keep riding strong and safely. It's also a valuable resource for coaches working with masters athletes and those involved in senior fitness programmes. The content is accessible yet detailed enough for serious athletes. If you're returning to cycling after a break or facing age-related plateaus, Joe Friel's insights can help you rediscover your potential.

Main Features

Friel breaks down the science of ageing into actionable advice. Key features include:

  • Age-Specific Training Principles: Learn how to adjust intensity, volume, and frequency to match your body's changing needs.
  • Nutrition and Fuelling Guidance: A chapter dedicated to eating for endurance, emphasising whole foods over supplements.
  • Injury Prevention Strategies: Exercises and routines to strengthen vulnerable areas and avoid common overuse injuries.
  • Periodization Plans: Structured training cycles that build fitness while allowing adequate recovery.
  • Mental Toughness Tips: Techniques to stay motivated and focused as goals evolve.

Training Advice Offered

The book provides a complete framework for designing a personalized training programme. It starts with assessing your current fitness level and setting realistic goals. Friel explains how to build a solid aerobic base, incorporate interval training, and taper for events. Special attention is given to maintaining bone density and muscle mass, which decline with age. The fuelling chapters cut through marketing hype, offering simple, practical advice on what to eat before, during, and after rides. Many readers have found the section on post-ride recovery particularly valuable.

How It Compares to Other Cycling Guides

Unlike many cycling books aimed at younger athletes, this one focuses squarely on the mature rider. It doesn't assume you can train like a 25-year-old. Instead, it acknowledges the realities of slower recovery, increased injury risk, and shifting priorities. While general guides like Friel's own The Cyclist's Training Bible are excellent, this volume provides targeted modifications. The Ageless Athlete Series stands out for its niche focus, and this book is no exception.

What Readers Say

Despite being originally published years ago, readers consistently praise the book's timeless relevance. They highlight the straightforward, no-nonsense advice on nutrition as a standout. Many feel the book effectively replaces the need for a personal cycling coach, covering all scenarios an older cyclist might face. Reviewers also note the affordable price point as an unexpected bonus. The consensus is that this is a must-read for anyone serious about cycling after 50.

This book is for educational purposes only and does not replace professional medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before beginning any new exercise programme.
