Child of Mine: Feeding with Love and Good Sense, Revised and Updated Edition

Who Should Read This Book?

This book is a valuable resource for parents, grandparents, and anyone involved in feeding children. It's especially helpful for those looking to move away from restrictive or diet-focused patterns within their family. Healthcare professionals, including paediatricians, dietitians, and therapists, may also find it a useful tool when supporting families. The content is accessible and free of jargon, making it suitable for readers at any stage of their parenting journey, whether you have a newborn or a ten-year-old.

The principles apply across all ages, and the revised edition ensures the guidance stays relevant in today's food environment. Updates cover topics like screen time's influence on eating habits and the role of packaged foods, keeping the advice current for modern Canadian households.

How 'Child of Mine' Supports Healthy Feeding Practices

Many Canadian families find the journey to balanced eating habits challenging. Ellyn Satter's classic guide offers a supportive framework built on trust and respect at the dinner table. Instead of strict rules, the book encourages caregivers to create a positive feeding environment where children learn to listen to their own hunger and fullness cues. The updated edition incorporates current research on child development and nutrition, making it a valuable resource for today's families.

The core philosophy centres on the division of responsibility: parents decide what, when, and where children eat, while children decide whether and how much to eat. This approach reduces mealtime power struggles and fosters a child's natural ability to self-regulate. With practical advice for infants through school-age children, the book addresses common concerns like picky eating, portion sizes, and introducing new foods.

What Does 'Feeding with Love and Good Sense' Mean?

At its heart, this concept blends nurturing affection with sound nutritional principles. Feeding with love means respecting your child's autonomy and emotions at mealtime—acknowledging that eating is about connection as much as nutrients. Good sense refers to evidence-informed strategies that make feeding manageable and enjoyable. Satter's method helps parents avoid common pitfalls such as pressure, bribery, or excessive control, which can inadvertently lead to unhealthy eating patterns.

By combining love with good sense, caregivers build a foundation for lifelong healthy relationships with food. The book provides relatable examples and steps to implement these ideas in real-life situations, from breastfeeding and formula feeding to family meals and snacks.

Key Themes Explored in This Guide

Several themes emerge throughout the book, each designed to empower parents. Trust is central: trusting that your child knows their own body's needs. Flexibility is another—understanding that children's appetites vary daily and that growth patterns influence eating behaviour. The revised edition also delves into feeding children with special needs, managing food allergies, and handling eating challenges during transitions like starting school or adolescence.

Satter's work also addresses the emotional aspects of feeding, such as how a parent's own relationship with food can affect their approach. The book encourages self-reflection and offers gentle guidance for breaking unhelpful cycles. Additional topics include feeding schedules, the role of physical activity, and tips for involving children in meal preparation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Feeding Children

How can I handle picky eating?

The book suggests a patient, low-pressure approach: continue offering a variety of foods without forcing or rewarding. Over time, most children expand their preferences naturally when they feel safe and in control.

Should I worry about my child's weight?

Instead of focusing on weight, Satter recommends supporting healthy behaviours. Trust that if you provide nutritious options and maintain a positive mealtime atmosphere, your child's growth will follow its own course. Consult a healthcare professional if you have concerns.

Is this method suitable for children with medical conditions?

The division of responsibility can be adapted for special needs, but always work with your child's healthcare team. The book includes guidance on managing feeding difficulties, but it does not replace medical advice.
