What Makes This Book Unique?

Unlike many trauma recovery resources, Call of the Wild centres the female experience. Johnson writes with a deep understanding of how women's bodies hold trauma differently, influenced by societal expectations, hormonal cycles, and the unique challenges of modern life. The book blends practical somatic exercises with insights from polyvagal theory, attachment science, and traditional healing practices. Readers have praised its ability to hold space for complexity and nuance, making it a standout resource for those on a healing journey.

Understanding Trauma Through a Somatic Lens

For many women, trauma isn't simply a memory—it's something your body carries with you every day. The nervous system responds to overwhelming experiences by shifting into survival modes: fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. These patterns can become entrenched, affecting emotional health, relationships, and daily life. Call of the Wild by Kimberly Ann Johnson offers a fresh perspective: healing begins by reconnecting with the body's innate wisdom. This book explores how somatic practices—body-based techniques—can help regulate the nervous system and release stored trauma. It's a guide for anyone seeking to understand their own responses and cultivate resilience.

Key Concepts in Somatic Healing

The book dives into the social nervous system, explaining how our connections with others shape our sense of safety. Johnson introduces the concept of the 'wild'—the untamed, resilient part of ourselves that knows how to heal. Through gentle guidance, she helps readers identify their own nervous system patterns and offers tools to shift from survival mode to a state of grounded presence. Key practices include breathwork, movement, and self-inquiry, all designed to restore a sense of agency and power.

Practical Guidance for Your Healing Journey

This is not a book to read passively. Johnson encourages readers to practice the somatic exercises, journal about their experiences, and approach healing as a gradual process. Each chapter builds on the last, offering a roadmap for those ready to explore their inner landscape. Whether you are new to somatic work or have prior experience, the book provides valuable insights and tools. Consider pairing it with professional therapy for deeper support.

How Readers Are Responding

Those who have read Call of the Wild often describe it as profoundly helpful, especially for those dealing with complex trauma (C-PTSD). Many appreciate the depth of content and plan to revisit it multiple times to absorb the rich material. The book's compassionate tone and practical approach have resonated with women seeking to understand their bodies and reclaim their strength. While some readers noted it requires active engagement, the rewards are described as illuminating and life-changing.
