About the Author and Her Groundbreaking Research

Rachel Louise Moran is a historian whose work explores the intersection of medicine, gender, and social policy. Her meticulous scholarship draws on archival materials, clinical records, and personal narratives, offering both depth and accessibility. One prominent perinatal mental health expert—a clinical professor of psychiatry and pioneer in PPD brain imaging—has praised the book for its authoritative and compassionate treatment of a long-overlooked topic.

What Does “Blue” Reveal About the History of Postpartum Depression?

This is more than a chronology of medical progress—it’s a story of cultural attitudes, gender politics, and the lived experiences of women. Moran traces the evolution of PPD from the nineteenth century, when it was often dismissed as “nervous exhaustion,” through the twentieth-century rise of psychiatry and feminism, and into the present era of advocacy and biomedical research. The book highlights how race, class, and geography shaped who received care and who was left behind.

Key Themes Explored in the Book

  • Historical neglect: How PPD was frequently dismissed as a character flaw or hormonal imbalance rather than a serious medical condition.
  • Shifting treatments: From rest s and sedatives to psychotherapy and antidepressants—and the ongoing debate about hormonal therapies.
  • Activism and awareness: The role of grassroots organizations, celebrity disclosures, and media in destigmatizing PPD.
  • Health disparities: How women of colour and low-income women have faced greater barriers to diagnosis and treatment.

Why This Book Matters for Understanding Maternal Mental Health

Postpartum depression (PPD) has long been shrouded in silence and misunderstanding. Blue: A History of Postpartum Depression in America breaks through that silence, offering a meticulously researched account of how this condition has been perceived, diagnosed, and treated across American history. For anyone seeking to comprehend the roots of today’s maternal mental health crisis in Canada and beyond, this book provides indispensable context.

What Readers Are Saying

The book has resonated with both medical professionals and general readers. One reviewer, a leading researcher in perinatal mental health, noted that the book provides a vital historical framework that is missing from clinical training. Others have praised Moran’s engaging writing style and her ability to make complex history accessible to a broad audience.

Practical Takeaways for Today

Blue does not offer medical advice, but it empowers readers to understand the historical forces that still shape PPD care. It underscores the importance of routine screening, culturally competent care, and continued advocacy. Whether you are a healthcare provider, a mother, or simply a curious reader, this book deepens your appreciation for how far we’ve come—and how far we still have to go.

This book is a historical account and is not a substitute for professional medical guidance. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of postpartum depression, please consult a healthcare provider.
