Who Should Read This Book?

Whether you are an adoptee seeking validation, an adoptive parent hoping to understand your child's inner world, or a therapist looking for a trusted clinical resource, Being Adopted: The Lifelong Search for Self is written for you. Co-authored by David M. Brodzinsky, Marshall D. Schecter, and Robin Marantz Henig, this book has become a cornerstone in adoption psychology—a go-to guide for anyone touched by adoption across Canada and beyond. Its compassionate, research-informed approach helps normalize feelings that many adoptee experience, such as loss, curiosity about origins, and the ongoing search for identity.

Extended family members, educators, and social workers will also find it illuminating, as it offers a window into the adoptee experience that remains often hidden. The book is particularly valuable for adult adoptees considering or undergoing a search for birth relatives, providing a thoughtful roadmap for the emotional terrain of reunion.

What Makes This Book Essential Reading?

Unlike many adoption books that focus on the practicalities of adopting or the joys of building a family, Being Adopted dives deep into the inner world of the adoptee. It addresses the often-unspoken questions: Who am I? Where do I fit? How does my adoption story influence my choices and relationships? The book provides a framework for understanding these questions as part of a healthy developmental process, not as signs of dysfunction.

One of its greatest strengths is its ability to speak to adoptees at any age. Whether you are a young adult grappling with identity, a middle-aged adoptee considering a search, or an older adoptee reflecting on a life lived across two families, the book offers insights that resonate across generations. Readers consistently describe it as “validating” and “grounding,” giving words to feelings they may have carried for years.

A Lifelong Perspective on Adoption

Adoption is not a single event but an ongoing process that shapes identity, relationships, and self-understanding throughout a lifetime. Being Adopted challenges the notion that adoption is resolved in childhood, instead presenting it as a lifelong journey of integration and self-discovery. Drawing on decades of clinical experience and interviews with adoptees, the authors reveal common emotional themes that many adoptees encounter at different life stages—helping to normalize feelings that might otherwise feel isolating or confusing. This perspective is especially relevant in today’s diverse Canadian landscape, where open, transracial, and international adoptions are incregly common.

What You'll Discover Inside

  • How adoption influences identity formation across the lifespan
  • Why feelings of loss and grief are normal parts of the adoption experience
  • Strategies for adoptive parents to foster open communication and resilience
  • Insights into the search for biological family and the reunion process
  • How therapists can incorporate adoption-sensitive approaches into their practice
  • Common myths about adoption—and what research actually reveals

The book also addresses differences between closed and open adoptions, international and transracial adoptions, and the unique challenges faced by adoptees who grow up feeling “different” from their adoptive families. Rather than offering one-size-fits-all answers, it encourages readers to explore their own narratives with curiosity and compassion.

Key Features and Approach

Organized around the life cycle, from infancy through older adulthood, each chapter explores how adoption-related themes manifest at different stages, making it easy to find relevant sections. The authors blend clinical case studies with accessible explanations of psychological concepts, ensuring the content is both rigorous and readable.

  • Developmental framework: Understand adoption's impact at each life stage
  • Real voices: Interviews and case examples bring theories to life
  • Practical guidance: Tips for parents, therapists, and educators on supporting adoptees
  • Search and reunion: A thoughtful examination of the complex emotions involved

The paperback edition—part of the Anchor Book series—is lightweight and portable, measuring approximately 5.2 by 8 inches and 0.55 inches thick, making it easy to carry in a bag or backpack.

How Readers Respond

Readers across Canada and beyond consistently praise the book for its honesty and depth. Adult adoptees frequently mention feeling “validated” and “seen” after reading it, noting that it helps them make sense of their life stories. Some have called it an essential “almanac” for adoptees—a reference to return to at different life stages. Adoptive parents appreciate the window it gives into their children's possible feelings, even when those feelings aren't openly expressed. Therapists value the clinical grounding and practical applications. While no book can address every individual experience, overall it remains one of the most highly recommended resources in the adoption field—a testament to its enduring relevance since its original publication.
