About the Author

Jeffrey Jensen Arnett is a renowned psychologist and the originator of the theory of emerging adulthood. He has published extensively on adolescent development, cultural influences, and the transition to adulthood. His research has been featured in numerous academic journals and popular media. This textbook reflects his commitment to making developmental science accessible and relevant.

What Makes the 5th Edition Unique?

The 5th edition of Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood incorporates significant updates to reflect the rapidly evolving field. New research on digital media use, identity in online spaces, and the impact of social issues (e.g., climate anxiety, economic uncertainty) are woven throughout. The text also includes expanded coverage of neuroscience, genetics, and the role of culture in development. Pedagogical tools such as chapter outlines, learning objectives, review questions, and real-world case studies enhance the learning experience. This edition maintains the hallmark emphasis on the emerging adulthood stage—a concept Arnett pioneered.

Key Themes Covered in This Edition

The book organizes content around major developmental domains:

  • Biological foundations: Puberty, brain maturation, and physical health
  • Cognitive changes: Information processing, moral reasoning, and executive function
  • Social and emotional development: Identity, self-esteem, intimacy, and autonomy
  • Contexts of development: Family, peers, school, work, and media
  • Cultural variations: How globalization and diversity shape the adolescent experience
  • Emerging adulthood: A distinct stage from ages 18 to 25, featuring exploration and instability

Each chapter integrates classic theories (e.g., Erikson, Piaget) with contemporary findings, giving readers a balanced perspective.

Who Should Read This Book?

This textbook is designed for undergraduate and graduate courses in adolescent development, lifespan psychology, and human development. It also serves as a valuable reference for educators, counsellors, social workers, and anyone working with young people. The clear, engaging writing style makes complex concepts accessible, while the depth of content satisfies advanced learners. Parents seeking a deeper understanding of their teens may also find the insights valuable.

How Does This Book Support Learning?

Each chapter is structured to facilitate comprehension and retention. Students will find:

  • Learning objectives that clarify key takeaways
  • Boxed features highlighting research methods, controversies, and applications
  • End-of-chapter summaries and key terms
  • Critical thinking questions that encourage analysis and discussion
  • Instructor resources such as test banks and PowerPoint slides (available separately)

The book also connects theory to practice, helping readers apply developmental principles to real-life scenarios.

What Is Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood?

Adolescence and emerging adulthood represent critical periods of human development, marked by profound physical, cognitive, and socioemotional changes. This textbook offers a comprehensive exploration of these stages, drawing on the latest research and theoretical frameworks. Written by leading scholar Jeffrey J. Arnett, the book examines how cultural contexts, family dynamics, and peer relationships shape development from puberty through the late twenties.

As a primary resource for courses in adolescent psychology, this 5th edition provides an up-to-date synthesis of the field. It covers topics ranging from brain development and identity formation to risk-taking behaviour and transitioning to adulthood. Whether you are a student, educator, or mental health professional, this text equips you with the knowledge to understand the complexities of this pivotal life phase.
