Vivian Gussin Paley (1929–2019) stands as one of the most influential figures in early childhood education. A MacArthur Fellowship recipient, she spent nearly four decades teaching at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where she pioneered a method of truly listening to children's stories and imaginative play. Her acclaimed books, such as White Teacher and You Can't Say You Can't Play, have shaped countless educators. Paley's hands-on experience and engaging storytelling style make her observations both relatable and credible.

One behaviour therapist described it as a valuable resource, while many parents remarked that it enhanced their appreciation of their children's imaginative games. Several reviewers noted it was assigned reading in education courses and lauded its stimulating content. The book is often called concise yet powerful, offering a fresh outlook on the importance of unstructured play.

Overview

In A Child's Work: The Importance of Fantasy Play, celebrated educator Vivian Gussin Paley presents a powerful argument for the essential role of imaginative play in early childhood. Based on years of classroom observation, she contends that fantasy play is far more than a simple diversion—it is a core mechanism through which children interpret their surroundings, cultivate social abilities, and establish cognitive frameworks. This book serves as an impassioned defence of play in an era when many schools are cutting recess and playtime in favour of academic drill.
