Key Ingredients Revealed: From E Numbers to Everyday Terms

Ever wondered what those mysterious names on food labels really mean? This edition explains not only common additives but also lesser-known ones like 'cholecalciferol' (vitamin D3) and 'sodium benzoate'. It clarifies the difference between natural and synthetic versions, and when an additive is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) or best avoided. The book demystifies scientific names that often frighten consumers, showing that not all long words are dangerous. For instance, ascorbic acid is simply vitamin C, and lecithin is a natural emulsifier found in eggs. With this knowledge, you can confidently navigate the ingredient lists of processed foods, supplements, and even cosmetics. The dictionary also covers additives used in organic products and those that are allowed in different countries, giving you a global perspective.

What Makes This Food Additive Dictionary Different?

Unlike vague online searches, this comprehensive guide provides concise, accurate descriptions of both harmful and desirable ingredients. It covers artificial colours, preservatives, sweeteners, emulsifiers, stabilizers, thickeners, and many more. Each entry explains the ingredient's function, potential health benefits or risks, and common sources. The book also includes handy cross-references, making it easy to look up additives by name or function. For example, you will find entries for preservatives like sodium benzoate, artificial colours like FD&C Red No. 40, and natural antioxidants like vitamin E (tocopherol). The 7th edition incorporates the latest research on food safety, including updates on GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status and regulatory changes. This ensures that you are getting the most current information available.

How to Use This Book for Safer Eating

Start by checking any packaged food ingredient list against the dictionary. For example, you will learn that 'tocopherol' is simply vitamin E, while 'calcium sulfate' is used in bread and cottage cheese. Use the book to identify hidden sources of MSG, artificial dyes, or preservatives you wish to avoid. Over time, you will become a savvy label reader, able to spot potentially concerning additives at a glance. The book also helps you understand the difference between natural and synthetic additives, and when an additive is generally recognized as safe or best avoided. By consulting this dictionary regularly, you can make healthier choices for yourself and your family. Whether you are managing a specific diet or just trying to eat cleaner, this reference will become an indispensable tool in your kitchen.
